Pointing Dog Training 4–5 Month Program

Our 4–5 month Pointing Dog program trains upland hunting breeds to find and hold game, quarter with hunters, and remain steady to wing and shot. Dogs gain field experience on quail, pheasant, chukar, sharp tail grouse, and more, including summer training on wild birds in North Dakota.

Build a Confident and Skilled Pointing Dog

The Pointing Dog Program at Cour’s Retrievers is designed for upland hunting breeds and focuses on developing reliable, confident hunting dogs capable of working in the field. Over 4–5 months, your dog will learn to quarter with hunters, locate game, point naturally, and remain steady to wing and shot — essential skills for a successful hunting season.

What Your Dog Will Learn

  • Quartering with hunters – move efficiently and cover ground while working with a handler
  • Finding game – locate upland birds such as quail, pheasant, chukar, sharp tail grouse, Hungarian partridge, and more
  • Pointing and holding point – remain steady when birds are in position
  • Field discipline – learn steadiness to wing and shot for safe and effective hunting

Summer Training on Wild Birds

Pointing breeds require a lot of running and field exposure. During summer months, we take our dogs to North Dakota to train on wild birds in natural hunting conditions. Nothing prepares a dog for hunting season like coveys of sharp tail, Hungarian partridge, and pheasants on the open prairies.

Who This Program is For

  • Mature pointing breeds, typically 6 months of age and older
  • Puppies starting at 12–16 weeks can enroll in our Pointing Head Start Program to build early hunting drive and natural pointing instincts
